Vineyard Update | Pruning Season…
Vineyards in winter are like ant beds after you have just run over them (but not deliberately)! The work usually starts in July after a few frosts while the resting vines are in a deep sleep after shedding their fruit.
The mornings in July and August is an optimum time to prune without creating a world war with the vines who enjoy their sleep.
In most winters, the day starts at 7.30am with the frost lying like a wet blanket over the vineyard. Circulation to the fingers hidden in a gloved hand is difficult but the arms and hand thaw out slowly as the sun warms the body.
This year has been different! Above average winter rain and wet boots. The wind from the SE in the morning moves around to trick you; there is no sun and high humidity. The days end like they started - cold all the way to your core.
The great incentive is the warmth that induces bud burst in early September and the thought that the vines might produce something special to sip on in a few years time.
Until then all of us in the Mudgee wine community, will remain patient and look forward to spring.
